The Cape Eleuthera Instituteis looking for an engineer with experience in renewable energy and/or biofuels who can focus on developing world-class research projects and direct institutional and Government thinking on sustainability. This role requires splitting time between performing research and writing and review. The candidate should be a self-starter, with an interest in advancing sustainability both locally and regionally.

The candidate’s objective is to develop and implement profitable models of sustainable development, particularly in the areas of renewable energy and biofuels that prioritize local ownership, environmental stewardship, and bottom-line results. CEI works with governments, businesses, universities, and communities on projects and policies focused on making sustainable development a profitable reality.

The candidate will be willing to work as an administrator, mentor/educator, and program developer in a multi-faceted, flexible, team-oriented environment. In your job, you must be willing to stretch beyond a traditional job description as you live and work closely with the local community and Island School and Deep Creek Middle School programs. Primarily the Renewable Energy Researcher will:
• Develop and implement research projects in the fields of renewable energy and biofuels
• Lead a research class for Island School semester students
• Identify opportunities to collaborate with local and regional organizations and government to promote ideas of sustainability. This includes developing new programs and communications tools.
• Identify carbon reduction project opportunities, in support of CEI’s “Carbon Balanced” initiative

CEI operates year round, typically 5.5 days a week. Staff are given four weeks of personal time every year. A minimum two-year commitment is required with longer-term career opportunities. We are an equal opportunity employer and especially encourage applications from Bahamians.

Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, math or science, plus two years work experience in the fields of energy, climate, environmental studies, or public policy or equivalent combination of education and experience
• History of creating and executing on projects, considers his/herself a self-starter
• Love of the ocean, tropical ecosystems, and low-impact living
• Desire to live in a small, remote place and a “can-do” attitude to address challenges and opportunities of such a place
• Excellent communication, social and problem-solving skills
